Most of the Payson Men’s Golf Association events are single-day tournaments.
But winning a PMGA major takes strong play over multiple weeks.
And Tim Ernst displayed his ability to consistently shoot low scores by winning the A Flight in the PMGA Match Play Major Championship June 4, 11 and 18 at Payson Golf Course. Oscar Garcia placed second.
Kevin Kelley won the B Flight, with Alex Armenta finishing second. Jim Dalgleish claimed the C Flight crown, with Ron Fischer taking runner-up honors.
Herb Sherman won the X Flight ahead of runner-up Mike Eilenfeldt. Dan Dorough prevailed over runner-up Dan Zertuche in the Y Flight and Ross Robertson finished first in the Z Flight ahead of second-place Dennis Schwebs.
In consolation play, Frank Szakal won the B Flight and Don Pollock placed second. Jerry McGuire won the C Flight, with Ralph Lindo finishing second. Richard Harding won the X Flight ahead of runner-up Steve Vincent. Bill McKenna claimed the Z Flight and Ed Kuhns placed second.
Bill Mullins fired a 66 to win the low net A Flight championship on June 18. Gary Campbell and Ken Althoff both carded 67s, with Campbell winning the tiebreaker to finish second. Ross Robertson matched Mullins with a 66 of his own to claim the B Flight crown by one stroke over Ed Quigley.
