The Hellsgate Fire Department is in deep mourning over the loss of one of their own firefighters, Lt. Bobby Mollere.

Bobby was stationed out of the Meads Ranch Fire Station. He passed away very suddenly on Saturday, March 8. Bobby was with his fellow firefighters at Payson High School training for wildland fires.

The fire department is working on a benefit in Bobby’s honor. No date has been set yet, but donations will be accepted at station 21 in Star Valley.

There will be a memorial service for Bobby on March 22 in Phoenix. More details will be made at a further date.

On a more happier note: Payson is putting on its best colors on the trees in the shopping centers. They are in full bloom and it almost reminds me of the cherry blossom festival in Washington, D.C. The Rim Country is truly a wonderful place to be living. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of Arizona. We just have to remember that our land is very fragile and at this point, very dry. We have to take extra precautions to preserve this wonderful community by spreading the word of how destructive a lighted match or cigarette can be. Please spread the word to everyone you meet, “Help preserve our forest!”

Shelby School

The local schools including Shelby School are now in spring break for two weeks. That means that there are more kids outside and along the streets. Please take extra precaution when driving on the streets for not only kids, but also doggies, who like to be in on all the activity. Our streets are narrow in Tonto Village leaving not much room to maneuver around the kids and animals, so we all need to slow down driving along our streets.

Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary

The new year will start with the first meeting of the season on Friday, March 14 at the Tonto Village Fire Station 22. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. to accommodate the ladies who work during the day. The first order of business will be election of officers, or as it is called, the executive board. Any lady who is community-minded and has the time to volunteer at the benefits (usually two) — Memorial weekend, and Labor Day weekend — will be welcome. There are also other committees that will need chair people. Since a new fire station is being built in the Village, the auxiliary is needed now more than ever. Come to the meeting and check it out.

One of the projects that the auxiliary is involved in is selling the cookbook, “Fireflies Can Cook,” which has become a big seller.

Double D Doings

The cafe part of the Double D has announced that on Saturday, March 15, the kitchen will be serving a free corned beef and cabbage dinner all day to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The bar will also be in on the celebration with a party including decorations and favors. Come and be Irish for the day!
