Payson Elks

The Payson Elks Lodge #2154, 1206 N. Beeline Hwy., has Friday dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is open to members and their guests.

Bingo is on Sunday. Doors open at noon and the game starts at 1 p.m. Bingo is open to the public.

Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Payson Area Computer Association

All members and guests are invited to the Payson Area Computer Association’s next general meeting at 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 2 in the community room of the Payson Public Library.

Club President Ray Baxter will show the slide presentation he gave at the Women’s Wellness Forum last month that deals with having a healthy computer and being a healthy computer user. Also covered will be aspects to consider when purchasing a new laptop. There will be a discussion on how the younger generation views old technology.

The club’s general meetings are held the first Friday of each month with a member “Fix-it” meeting held mid-month.

Tai Chi classes

Tai Chi and Qigong classes are offered at 9 a.m. Saturdays at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church parish hall, 1000 N. Easy St., Payson. The program is especially designed for seniors 50 or older, but is beneficial for all ages. There is no charge, but donations are accepted to help the church with utility bills. Payson Walkers

The Payson Walkers group invites everyone to join its daily, hour-long walk, mostly on pavement. The start time is 8 a.m. from the following sites:

Republican rummage sale, Meet & Greet

The Rim Country Republican Club will have a rummage sale and a candidate meet & greet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 3 at Rumsey Park Ramada 5. 

Candidates begin speaking at 10 a.m. and mingle with the public. Bring $5 for a pulled pork sandwich lunch and drink — and for dessert, purchase goodies from the bake sale.

Bring a pen to sign many petitions candidates need to qualify for the primary ballot. Also bring a checkbook or cash to donate $5 to the Clean Elections candidates or write a bigger check for candidates who are running traditional campaigns.  

Special Bible study

Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane, Payson, is holding a special Bible study at regular Sunday services.

The pastor and congregation invite Rim residents and visitors to join the journey through “The Story” and learn how we fit into God’s plan for us. This week’s theme is “God Builds a Nation.”

Overeaters Anonymous

Overeaters Anonymous meets from 2 p.m. Mondays at Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane, Payson.

There are no fees or dues. The only membership requirement is a desire to not compulsively overeat anymore.

Scouting adventures

Scouting adventures await boys ages 7 to 18 with Pack 7354. While the group meets at the Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, it is nondenominational and provides a true scouting experience with lots of outdoor activities and the opportunity to learn skills. Both the Pack and Troop meet at 6:30 p.m. Mondays at Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church fellowship hall, 507 W. Wade Lane, Payson. For details, call (928) 950-4576.

Order of the Eastern Star

The Ponderosa Chapter #64 O.E.S. meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Mondays at the Masonic Lodge, 200 E. Rancho Rd., Payson.

A potluck dinner is held at 5:30 at the second meeting of the month.

All Eastern Star members are invited. Ladies with any Masonic family affiliation are encouraged to join the group.

In addition to the meetings, the ladies gather at 10 a.m. every Wednesday for a fun game of canasta.

Payson Area Singles is a social group for men and women of all ages. There are no dues and no pressure.

Friendship Bible Class

Veterans of Foreign Wars

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America will meet at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the American Legion Post #69, located at 709 E. Highway 260.

Card players wanted

The Saving Graces of Payson — a Canasta card-playing group — is looking for a few ladies who enjoy fun, laughter and friendship.

This Red Hat group meets at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of every month at the Crosswinds Restaurant patio room. There is a break for lunch around noon and play and resumes after lunch. Anyone interested in joining will be welcomed. You do not need to know how to play, the members will be happy to teach the game.

Medieval reenactment

The Rim Country Celts, in conjunction with Dimi Espresso, present the Company of Reichwald, an organization dedicated to Medieval and Renaissance reenactment, at Dimi Espresso Café in the Swiss Village in Payson Wednesday, May 7.

The evening’s program will begin at 6 p.m. with a performance by Cinnamon Twist of a tasteful variety of Irish and Scottish songs. At 7 p.m., the Company of Reichwald will discuss Medieval and Renaissance reenactment and the art of sword fighting.

The public is invited to attend and there is no cover charge for the program. Everyone should feel free to wear their favorite Celtic or Irish apparel. This will be the last in the series of Celtic programs presented by the Rim Country Celts until after the summer months.

Rim Country Celts

The Rim Country Celts board meeting is at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 8 at the Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., Payson.

Anyone who wishes to join the club or give input about Celtic education is welcome.

Upcoming Celtic themed events include Highland Games May 10 and 11 at Prescott’s Watson Lake; and July 19 and 20 in Flagstaff.

Daughters of the American Revolution

The May meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, May 9, in the conference room of the Payson Public Library.

The day’s guest speaker is Robert Flores, Special Projects Coordinator, speaking about the Arizona World War II Memorial and History.

The DAR focuses on preserving American history and securing America’s future through education and patriotism. Women age 18 and older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution are eligible for membership. Prospective members and guests are welcome at all meetings.

Masonic Lodge hosts Deep Pit BBQ May 17

Sy Harrison Masonic Lodge will have its Annual Deep Pit BBQ at 200 E. Rancho Road starting at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17 and it will continue until the food runs out. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. The meal includes Deep Pit BBQ, coleslaw, beans, desserts and non-alcoholic beverages.

The Masons are also taking advance orders for BBQ Brisket only at $7 per pound. To place an order, call (928) 978-3192 by Thursday, May 15 for pick-up after noon on Saturday, May 17.

The Lodge members are also selling $20 raffle tickets for Two Round Trip Airline Tickets that include a round trip flight between any two major airports in the USA.

The drawing will be held at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 14 or at an earlier Stated Meeting night if all 300 tickets are sold. The winner will be contacted immediately. Tickets will be available at the BBQ or contact any Payson Mason. Full contest rules are on our website www.payson
