Rodeo needs volunteers

The Payson Pro Rodeo Committee is inviting Rim residents to join and help bring the community the annual Gary Hardt Memorial Spring Rodeo.

The rodeo, which is the third weekend in May, needs ticket takers, people to man the souvenir booth and 50/50 ticket sales, security help is also needed, as well as assistance in other non-livestock areas.

See what it is all about at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 6 at the Quality Inn (formerly the Best Western Hotel). There is also a meeting at 6 p.m., May 12.

Junior wrestling starts today

The Payson junior wrestling program begins today, May 6. It is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday through September in the Payson High School Wilson Dome wrestling room. Kids of all ages are invited to come out to any or all of the sessions to learn techniques. For more information, contact Rocky Beery at (602) 803-0461.

Upcoming Chamber events

The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Bashas’, which just underwent a big remodel, at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 7.

Another ribbon-cutting event is planned at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 8 at Home Center Supply (True Value).

A mixer is slated for 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 8 at the Payson Campgrounds & RV Resort. The event will be held in the clubhouse if the wind continues; if conditions permit, it  will be outdoors by the pool. 

PAWS

Payson Area Woofers Society (PAWS, (which maintains the dog park and raises funds for low-cost spay and neuter clinics) will meet at the Payson Library meeting room at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 7.

Roger May of Mayday Retrievers will be talking about snake training.

Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend.

GCC graduation ceremonies

Gila Community College has scheduled its 2014 commencement ceremonies. The GCC Payson Campus commencement exercises will be at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 7 at the First Church of the Nazarene, 200 E. Tyler Parkway, Payson. For more information about GCC, call the local Payson Campus, (928) 468-8039.

Breast Cancer Support Group

The Breast Cancer Support Group meets the second Thursday of every month (May 8) from 12:30 p.m. until around 2:30 p.m. at the Mt. Cross Lutheran Church, 601 E. Highway 260, Payson. 

The support group is for anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer — be it a new diagnosis or for those who are “long time survivors.”

Payson Tea Party to host Trevor Lakey on Thursday

Members of the Payson Tea Party will host Trevor Lakey of Heritage Action for America Thursday, May 8.

Lakey helps citizens hold Congress accountable by giving them the tools they need to counter progressive ideologies at the U.S. House and Senate. The meeting is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Tiny’s Family Restaurant, 600 E. Highway 260. For more information, call (928) 951-6774.

Community Breakfast

Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church is hosting a community breakfast from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., Friday, May 9 at 507 W. Wade Lane, Payson. Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, coffee and juice.

Rim Country residents and visitors are invited for food and fellowship. A free will offering will be accepted.

Mental Health Month Open House is May 9

Southwest Behavioral Health Services will have a Mental Health Month Event/Open House at its Empowerment Center, 107 E. Aero Drive, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, May 9 for members of the Payson community.

P.E.O. Sisterhood

Chapter DF of the P. E. O. Sisterhood will meet at 9:30 a.m., Friday, May 9 at the Church of the Nazarene, 200 E. Tyler Parkway, Payson. The hostess will be Carolyn Bates. Linda Lanctot and Phyllis Lee will serve as co-hostesses.

All Corvette Show

The Rim Country Corvettes group will have its 3rd Annual All Corvette Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10 at Chapman Auto Center in Payson. Admission is free, so bring the whole family. This is a non-judging show and anyone with a Corvette may enter. Call (928) 978-0437 for details.

Chocolates for Mom

Delicious See’s chocolates are available for Mother’s Day from the Zane Grey Soroptimist International.

Members will have the candy for sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, May 9 at National Bank, at the corner of Highway 87 and West Main Street. Saturday, May 10, See’s will be at Corvette Car Show at Chapman Auto Center.

Payson Tea Party Scholarship

The Payson Tea Party (PTP) is offering its first annual PTP Scholarship Award. The scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating senior from any school within the Payson Unified School District (PUSD) including Christian or home school.

The graduating senior is to be enrolled in an institution of higher learning, which may be any college, community college, vocational or technical school.

To apply, obtain a copy of the scholarship application from the PUSD District Office at Julia Randall Elementary School or send an email to: USAFreedomDSY@aol.com. All applications must be returned (postmarked) by May 9, 2014.

GCC art show and sale

Gila Community College students in Jacqui Jeffrey’s art classes will have their works on display and for sale from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, May 9 at Dimi Espresso Cafe, 612 N. Beeline Highway.

The work includes watercolor, acrylic, drawing and pastel paintings and all will be matted, with some framed. Free refreshments, including wine, soft drinks, cheese and crackers will be offered, and the event is free. Jeffrey said the students’ works make for “perfect” Mother’s Day gifts.

Anyone interested in taking a painting class with Jeffrey at GCC this summer can still sign up. The class, held from 8 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday and will run eight weeks beginning May 27.

Free Movie Night

Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 601 E. Highway 260, Payson, will have a free movie at 7 p.m., Friday, May 9 in its log building.

Children attending must be accompanied by an adult.

The movie is free and includes free popcorn and beverages.

New Beginnings benefit

The Nook is raffling a beautiful hand-tooled leather checkbook wallet, which would make a great Mother’s Day gift. Come by and purchase a raffle ticket for a chance to win this checkbook wallet. Tickets are 25 cents each or five for $1. The raffle will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 10, the day before Mother‘s Day.

The Nook new and resale shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday at 408 W. Main St. Proceeds from sales benefit the New Beginnings Center.

Plant sale

The High Country Garden Club Annual Plant Sale is from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 10 in the Walmart parking lot.

This is the group’s major, yearly fund-raising project. This year the event will incorporate a craft sale and a bake sale along with the many indoor and outdoor plants, which will include annuals, perennials, vegetables and herbs.

Members will be on hand to discuss the plants and assist with loading items in vehicles. 

AARP Smart Driver Course

An AARP Smart Driver Course will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with an hour break for lunch, Saturday, May 10 at the Payson Senior Circle, 215 N. Beeline Highway.

To register, call (928) 472-9290 or register in person at Payson Senior Circle. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members, (cash or check), payable on day of class.

The course has all new material for 2014. The class is designed for those age 50-plus, but is open to all people 18 and over. Participation may also earn a discount on your vehicle insurance.

Pie & Coffee

Rim residents and visitors are invited to join the Rim Country Republican Club for Pie & Coffee at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10 at the Senior Center, 514 W. Main St., Payson.

Free Piano Concert

Enjoy music with a Spanish/Latin American rhythm at 3 p.m., Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11 performed by Payson’s own pianists, Angeline Ng and Ray Hughes. 

Chari-Tea will be providing refreshments and any donations will go to Payson Community Kids. If you cannot make it on that day, the rehearsals are open to the public too. Please RSVP Angeline at (928) 951-4853 for location.
