PHOENIX – Payson High’s softball team matched the school record for wins by beating Snowflake in the semifinals on Friday night to reach the state championship game for the first time in school history.

But it was Winslow celebrating on Saturday night.

Taylor Baca’s two-run double in the top of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the No. 2 Bulldogs to a 5-3 victory over the top-seed Longhorns in the Division 3 state final at Rose Mofford Sports Complex.

Baca had three hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning to give Winslow an early 2-0 lead.

Payson beat Winslow 2-0 at Payson on April 8 in the only other game between the teams this season. It was the Bulldogs’ only loss of the season. Winslow (30-1) was playing in the title game for the sixth consecutive year. The Bulldogs had gone 1-4 in the previous five finals, winning it all in 2010.

PHS finished 29-9, matching the win total from last year’s team, which lost to Winslow in the semifinals.
