My husband and I attended a play called “Alice in Westerland” at the Shelby School on Thursday, May 15. The play is in one act and the actors involved all of the students of the school ranging from a 6-year-old who played a delightful little bunny to teenagers who played various parts such as a moving cactus, a narrator, a sheriff, and a myriad of different characters. The play was a sheer delight to watch. The audience was laughing throughout the play and joined in clapping when the actors broke out in square dancing a few sets. Alan Carpenter of Tonto Basin coached the students for a few months prior to the play.
There were many helpers that helped to make the play a success, such as parents of the students who made the costumes which were creative and looked difficult. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the hour and a half and left with smiles on our faces.
Hellsgate Fire Department
On May 20, a “final inspection” ceremony was held at the Hellsgate Fire Station #21 in Star Valley for retiring fire Chief Gary Hatch. There were many fire chiefs and captains from the surrounding area who attended. Battalion Chief David Bathe told the audience that the firefighters have many rituals that they perform, and this one was particularly poignant since Chief Hatch has served the community for over 32 years. There were quite a few wet eyes when the ceremony was concluded.
A reception was held immediately following the ceremony in the bay area of the fire station. Food was provided for the guests by the Hellsgate Fireflies.
The Fireflies will be selling benefit raffle tickets for fallen firefighter Bobby Mollere. A 22 caliber, Smith & Wesson will be the raffle item. The donation is for $10 a ticket or three tickets for $25. Tickets can be obtained from any Fireflies member or can be bought at Station #21 in Star Valley. The drawing will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. You need not be present to win, and must be 21 years or older on the day of the drawing.
I just received word that a former Thompson Draw II resident has passed away in March. Carol O’Dell was an active member of the Hellsgate Auxiliary for a number of years and also divided her time with the Tonto Village Chapel during the summer for Vacation Bible School. Carol will be missed this summer when she would normally be helping her community. Condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Carol’s family.
On May 25, Grant Coley of Tonto Village II will add another candle to his birthday cake. Two former residents of Tonto Village III will celebrate a birthday and an anniversary. Alice Andreas will add another year on May 27. On that same day, Charlie and Gary Martin, now of Prescott will observe 47 years of marriage Congratulations to the both of you. Hellsgate firefighter Nick deGroot will add another candle on My 30. Happy birthday to you Nick.
