Rifle Raffle Will Benefit Firefighter’S Widow

The Village

My husband and I received our electric bill from Arizona Public Service recently and we took a close look at it, which included the sales tax section. The surprising item we found was a city sales tax for Tonto Village and probably the other rural areas in our vicinity. We are not in the city, so why should we be paying city sales tax? On Tuesday, we asked the person behind the counter and she said that we had been paying that tax all along! But ... we just never paid much attention to that section of the bill.

The person then made a request for inquiry on this matter and we were told that we would receive a letter with the findings. At this point we don’t know how long this will take or if there will be any adjustment on our bill in the future.

The reason I am letting you know about this tax is if you also are being charged this tax illegally. This would pertain to all communities outside the Payson city limits. Check your APS bill today!

Big celebration in Bear Flat

This past Saturday afternoon Phon and Dara Sutton and Tom and Pat McCauley hosted an open house for newlyweds Nancy and Chris McCauley. Nancy is the daughter of Phon and Dara and Chris is the son of Tom and Pat. Nancy and Chris met in Bear Flat, and both the Suttons and the McCauleys have a home in Bear Flat. The open house was for all of the Bear Flat residents plus members of both families and friends. Chris and Nancy are the first two people that met and fell in love and joined the two families together that were from Bear Flat.

Congratulations to Nancy and Chris, and may your love begin with “Once upon a time ... and end with ‘happily ever after.” Best wishes and wishing you both an eternity of wedded bliss.

Bypass needed

This past weekend was filled with visitors to the Rim Country. The traffic was outrageous! Just getting across town was a major undertaking! In my opinion, the city leaders should reconsider a bypass. This would alleviate the congestion on the Beeline and give the locals easy access to the business places, like the banks. I saw people waiting for a very long time just to get across the street to go to the banks. Does anyone know why a bypass had been rejected? This situation will only multiply tenfold when the college is in operation.

Hellsgate Fire Department

Since Gary Hatch has reached his retirement, he will still be very busy overseeing and working on the new fire station in Tonto Village. He has made a commitment to see the completion of the fire station before the end of this year.

The Fireflies auxiliary will also be busy with fundraisers to help defray some of the cost of the new station. There will be a “working” meeting on Friday, June 13 at the Tonto Village station. Everyone should be there at the back parking lot by 6:30 p.m. The Fireflies will be part of the food festival at Bashas’ on June 14, selling T-shirts, caps and the cookbook, “Fireflies Can Cook.” The Fireflies are also collecting raffle money for a Smith & Wesson 22 caliber rifle valued at over $800. The proceeds will be going to fallen firefighter Bobby Mollere’s widow. The tickets are $10 each or three for $25. The drawing will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. You need not be present to win, but you must be 21 years old or older on the day of the drawing. A T-shirt with Bobby’s name along with the Hellsgate emblem will be offered for sale at $15.

Starting off the month of June is Jerry Farmer of Tonto Village I. Jerry will light a birthday candle on June 2. Marilyn Lamb of Kohl’s Ranch will celebrate her big day on June 5. Marilyn is also a Domino Diva and she comes to the Village to play whenever she can.

Vicki Groetegood, a former resident of Christopher Creek and a former Domino Diva, and now of Los Angeles, Calif., shares her big day with Marilyn. Happy birthday to you both.

Happy anniversary wishes to Duane and Janice Long of the Long Ranch. They will celebrate their anniversary on June 7. Best wishes to you both.

Good to be a guy ...

It’s good to be a guy because

... car mechanics tell you the truth.

... a five-day vacation requires only one suitcase.

... three pairs of shoes are more than enough.

... you don’t have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut or bolt.

Have a great week and let’s hope for rain!
