The Friends of Rim Country Gila Community College awarded $7,600 in tuition scholarships for the 2014-2015 school year to 13 students at a luncheon on May 19 at Mazatzal Casino.
Six of the recipients were nursing students, five Payson High School students coming to the college this fall for the fist time, and two are continuing GCC students.
Friends of Rim Country Gila Community College board member John Wakelin appreciated some of the human interest stories.
“During the luncheon, one of the recipients brought along her foster mother,” said Wakelin. “The mother came to us after the presentation and thanked us profusely as the recipient was coming from a troubled past and now is reinvigorated with self-esteem that others would help her on her path.”
Last year, the organization gave out six scholarships, said Wakelin.
A scholarship committee reviewed applications and selected the students who would receive awards.
Wakelin said he’s even seen students out and about town that have benefited from past scholarships.
“During our (fundraising) showing of “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” at the Sawmill a young lady came with two young children in tow,” said Wakelin. “Turns out she had applied and earned a scholarship from us. It was very satisfying to see a young woman pursuing a career in nursing while rearing her children.”
Friends of Rim Country Gila Community College is hosting a Dollars for Scholars dinner and auction at Chaparral Pines clubhouse on June 28 to raise money for next year’s scholarships.
