Rescuers spend night on mountain with hiker suffering from altitude sickness
On April 21st at approximately 8:30 AM the Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue responded to a report of a lost hiker on Humphrey’s Peak. The 59 year old male hiker was determined to be off trail at approximately 11,700 foot elevation in an area known as Temptation Gully. The hiker was reported to be cold, tired, disoriented, with some underlying medical conditions.
Northwest rattled by 3.7 magnitude quake
A magnitude 3.7 earthquake shook northwestern Arizona south of Littlefield, Arizona, at 9:06 pm on 17 April 2016. This event is part of a swarm of more than 42 small magnitude earthquakes that began on 28 March with an M2.1 event located approximately 29 miles SSE of Littlefield, Arizona. The most recent event, M1.3, occurred at 4:58 pm (MST) on 18 April.

The warm weather we have enjoyed has the gardener’s mind turning to plans for the upcoming season. The big three of gardening are site, sun and soil. By deciding on these three early, your garden plan can come together.
I am by no stretch of the imagination a gardener. Still, I like to read about gardening, listen to experts and veterans of the green thumb wars and enjoy seeing things blooming and producing their bounty.
This season, the Payson Community Garden will only have eight classes running weekly from March 12 until May 7 — just in time to get the garden prepared for planting summer crops around June 1.

Fee-free day doesn't include campgrounds
The Tonto National Forest will waive fees at many recreation sites on President’s Day, Monday, February 15, 2016. Fees will be waived at many day-use sites, such as picnic areas, in cooperation with other federal land management agencies under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. Day-use fees will be waived at all standard amenity fee sites operated by the Tonto National Forest. Camping and campground fees are not waived. During all other times, the Tonto Daily Pass or the Tonto Discovery Pass is required at more than 50 recreation sites including Salt and Verde river locations, boat launch ramps, swimming areas, day use areas, and campgrounds.
River trip permits scarce
On Monday, February 1, 2016 the National Park Service will begin accepting applications for noncommercial river trip permits to raft the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park. The permits are for specific launch dates within calendar year 2017. A total of 472 permits will be available for 12- to 25-day river trips. Eligible individuals may apply online at the weighted lottery website located at http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/whitewater-rafting.htm.

Coconino Sheriff warns hikers
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and the Coconino National Forest are warning backcountry mountain travelers to be alert for potential avalanche hazards on the San Francisco Peaks. The early season snowpack, coupled with recent clear and cold nights, wind events, and a large amount of new snow could produce hazardous conditions in the backcountry. This includes the side country bordering the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Area.
