Heavy smoke in the Payson area Monday afternoon is from a prescribed burn north of Payson on the Mogollon Rim, fire officials say. 

The wind is pushing the smoke into town, said Payson Fire Chief Davis Staub, who spoke with a member of the Forest Service.

Mogollon Rim Ranger District

Sawmill Project

Where: The burn area is seven miles southeast of Mormon Lake, east of Lake Mary Road, using Forest Roads 638, 124H, 92C, local topography and FR 6045 as boundaries. (34°49'05.6"N, 111°22'32.4"W)

Size: 1,200 acres in total.

Closures/Restrictions: None.

Smoke Impacts: Smoke is predicted to move toward the east/northeast and may impact local communities such as Mormon Lake Village and motorists on Lake Mary Road. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle in the Happy Jack area and drain down nearby canyons.

East Clear Creek Project

Where: About four miles east of C.C. Cragin Reservoir.

Size: 1,300 acres in total, broken into manageable blocks each day.

Closures/Restrictions: None.

Smoke Impacts: Smoke is predicted to move toward the east/northeast and may impact local communities in the Blue Ridge area and motorists on state Route 87. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle and drain down nearby canyons.

Flagstaff Ranger District

Munds Park and Coyote Park Projects

Where: On the east side of I-17 approximately one mile north and immediately south of the community of Munds Park. (34°58'20.92"N x 111°37'59.83"W)

Size: Approximately 1,900 acres total.

Closures/Restrictions: None.

Smoke Impacts: Smoke is predicted to drain down Munds Canyon and impact Sedona and possibly the Village of Oak Creek in the evening and early morning hours. By each afternoon, smoke is predicted to rise and move toward the east/northeast and will be seen by motorists in the area on Lake Mary Road.

Roundup Gash Project

Where: Approximately six miles south of Mormon Lake on the west side of Lake Mary Road. (34°50'28.9"N, 111°28'11.7"W)

Size: Approximately 2,253 acres total.

Closures/Restrictions: None.

Smoke Impacts: Smoke is predicted to drain down Rattlesnake Canyon and impact the Village of Oak Creek in the evening and early morning hours. By the each afternoon, smoke is predicted to rise and move toward the east/northeast and will be seen by motorists in the area on Lake Mary Road.

Mustang Burn Project (between Mountainaire and Munds Park)

Where: Approximately 10 miles southeast of Flagstaff, east of Interstate 17.

Size: 600 acres.

Closures/Restrictions: None expected

Smoke Impacts: Smoke is predicted to move toward the east/northeast and may be seen by area motorist near I-40, Lake Mary Road and on the east side of Flagstaff. Smoke may settle in the areas of Flagstaff’s Country Club subdivisions, Walnut Canyon and Doney Park during the cooler evening hours and the following morning hours. It is predicted to disperse by the following afternoon.
