John Stuart Myers 1923 - 2009
John Stuart Myers, always called Jack, a longtime resident of Pine, passed away Oct. 14, 2009 after a brief illness, just a few days short of his 86th birthday.
He was born Oct. 22, 1923 in Dayton, Ky. to Martha and John Myers.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughter, Nancy Farnham; and stepson, Geoffrey Hunt. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Krissy Dawes, Jackie Dawes, Billy Dawes, Alicia Thompson, Jun Hunt, Sara Hunt and Mei Hunt; two great-grandchildren, Sterling Dawes and Dalli Aguirre; his first wife, Vivian Myers; two sisters and several nieces and nephews in Kentucky.
Mr. Myers served in the U.S. Army for four years and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds he received two days after landing in Normandy.
After the war he worked in sales until moving to Pine in the late 1960s.
“When Jack arrived in Pine, he knew he was home,” writes his wife. “He loved the Rim Country and the wonderful people here.”
He had many careers in the Rim Country, including school bus driver for the Pine School District, general manager of the Payson Roundup, and owner of Grumpy’s Donut Shop in Pine. Grumpy’s Donuts were named Arizona’s Best in 1992 by The Arizona Republic.
At Mr. Myers’ request, there will be no funeral services. The family asks that memorial donations be made to Hospice Compassus, 511 S. Mud Springs Road, Payson, AZ 85541.
