George “Duke” Spencer 1927 - 2009
George Owen “Duke” Spencer died Oct. 14, 2009 in Payson. He was born May 8, 1927 in Illinois. The Army veteran moved to Payson in 1991. He enjoyed acting, appearing in several plays in Park City, Utah and as “Scully” in the 1989 horror movie, “Prison,” starring Viggo Mortensen. He is said to have appeared in the films “War Wagon” with John Wayne and “Hour of the Gun” with James Garner. He was also a volunteer with the Special Olympics program.
He is survived by his wife, Annie G.S. Spencer of Payson; son, John Shaffer Spencer of Chandler; grandson, Kyle; daughter, Georgene Distad of the Pacific Northwest; daughter, Sandra Furrow of the Pacific Northwest; son, Jay Spencer (deceased); daughter, Krishanna J. Spencer of central Virginia; and daughter, Carrie E. Spencer of Southern California. Mr. Spencer is also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
There was a memorial service Oct. 23 at Mount Cross Lutheran Church in Payson.
