Francis “Frank” Conway Mathis

Francis Conway “Frank” Mathis, 85, of Payson, passed away peacefully on Dec. 25, 2009 surrounded by family.
He is survived by his dear wife of 36 years, Margaret; daughters, Lesley Bowler of Oceanside, Calif., Lenor Van Nynatten of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Martha Sporer of Payson; son, Mike Sporer of Medford, Ore.; 22 grandchildren (who knew him as Poppy), nine great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
He was born on Jan. 21, 1924 in West Monroe, La. He was one of five children. Mr. Mathis proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Forces in World War II with the 484th Bombardment Group and was a loyal employee of University Mechanical Contractors for 35 years. He was a member of The American Legion and Sheet Metal Workers Union.
He loved golf, snowmobiling, and four-wheeling. For those who knew him, knew he never in his life met a stranger, writes his family.
A memorial service will be held in the spring at Forest Lakes.
