Elmer G. Schienbein
August 7, 1928 - February 11, 2009
Elmer G. Schienbein died Feb. 11, 2009 at the age of 80. He was born Aug. 7, 1928 in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada to Emma and Adam Schienbein.
Mr. Schienbein moved his family from Toronto, Canada to Phoenix in 1960 where he founded Phoenix Flower Shops. He grew the operation into the largest retail floral business in the Southwest and one of the top 50 in the country.
He retired in 1998, but remained active in the company at the holidays and at industry events until his death. He served in leadership positions with the Arizona State Florists Association and the florists Transworld Delivery Association (FTD). He was also active in a number of civic and fraternal organizations.
Mr. Schienbein is survived by his best friend, Barbara Watts; sons, Donald and Tyson; daughters, Donna Baird, Lara Avis and Diana Craft; and sister, Doris Vigtussen. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20, with a memorial service at 3:30 p.m. at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden Road in Scottsdale. There will also be a memorial at noon, Saturday, Feb. 21 at Messinger Payson Funeral Home, 302 W. Aero Drive.
