Hobart A. (Jack) A. Powers Jr.
Hobart A. (Jack) Powers Jr. died June 26, 2009 at his home in Deer Creek Village, Ariz.
A memorial service was held in his honor June 30 with military honors. He served in several duty stations and on board seven ships in the United States Navy, retiring from the Navy in Norfolk, Va. as a BM1 in 1968, and then served inactive duty until 1979.
Mr. Powers moved to Phoenix, where he met Mary in 1972, they were together for 37 years. They moved to Snowflake in the early 1970s and bought 20 acres of virgin land and built a beautiful ranch where they raised horses.
Mr. Powers was asked to take a job for the town of Snowflake where he stayed for 10 years and retired from the city in 1988. The couple moved to Deer Creek in 1989 so they could be close to fishing and camping with friends and family.
He has five daughters all from Norfolk, Va., and two sons-in-law, both serving 30 years in the United States Navy, making it their lifetime career. The youngest daughter, Pamela Sue Powers Disponett has served 23 years in the United States Navy and is following in her father’s footsteps.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Sonya Powers, Jacque Powers Bowman, Martha Powers Hamblin and Pamela Sue Powers Disponett. He is also survived by Cathy Boretsky Bjerkan of Snowflake; Daniel Boretsky of Salt Lake City, Utah; Richard Boretsky (Jack’s fishing buddy); Robert Boretsky; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
His oldest daughter, Theresa Beaman, preceded Mr. Powers in death at the age of 48.
Mrs. Powers would like to thank the people of Hospice, the Payson Military Honor Guard and all who helped and sent flowers and gifts. Many compliments to the wonderful tribute from the Payson Military Honor Guard — “It was the nicest they’d ever seen,” writes the family.
