Henry “Lee” Gassaway

May 17, 1931 - July 8, 2009

Henry “Lee” Gassaway, 78, died July 8, 2009. He was born May 17, 1931 to Henry and Hazel Gassaway in Phoenix.
Mr. Gassaway was a retired first sergeant with the Tucson Police Department. After retirement, he enjoyed many years as a fishing guide at Roosevelt Lake.
He was also a member of Tucson Masonic Lodge #4.
Mr. Gassaway is survived by his wife of 32 years, Nancy Gassaway, who was his primary and dedicated caregiver for the past two years; sons, Allan Lee and his wife Kristy of Newport Beach, Calif. and Richard Gassaway and his wife Julie of Flagstaff; daughters, Donna Holbert of Tucson, Lynda Geiler and husband Jim of San Diego, Calif. and Liz Roush and husband Dan of Tucson; stepdaughter, Valarie Grant and husband Troy of Roswell, N.M.; and stepsons, Mark Culbertson of Tucson and Steve Culbertson and wife Kim of Tucson. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Austin, Andrew, William and Matthew Rousch; Nick Holbert and wife Julie, and Lucinda Holbert; Nathan Lee, Shane Lee, Michelle Howland and husband Jeff; Caleb Grant and wife Emily, and Luke Grant; Brent Culbertson, Kyndal Culbertson and Mark D. Culbertson. His special sister-in-law, Peggy Shumake and husband Don, who both gave tirelessly throughout his illness, also survive Mr. Gassaway.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Tonto Basin Baptist Church in Punkin Center, with Troy Grant, Don Shumake and Eric Woods officiating.
There wasn’t anything that he could not learn to do, and all the kids or grandchildren always wanted his used vehicles or tools because he was a perfectionist and took extremely good care of those things he had worked hard to obtain, his family writes. He loved his family and his two faithful schnauzers, Rowdy and Mindy. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Donations may be made to the Humane Society of Central Arizona, 812 S. McLane Road, Payson, AZ 85541.
