1922 - 2009
Lillie Riley Uher Gibson Stanford, 87, of Payson, died July 8, 2009 at Hospice Friendship Village in Tempe.
She was born May 12, 1922 in Oakland, Calif. to Frank and Lillie Uher, the youngest of three children.
At the age of 2 she lost her father to tuberculosis and during the Great Depression her family turned their home into a boarding house.
After graduating from University High School in Oakland she attended beauty college. Throughout her life, she worked for several doctors as a receptionist in Oakland, Livermore and Pleasanton, Calif.
In July of 1942, she married William J. Gibson in St Louis, Mo. Together they raised their two boys, David and William, in Oakland, Calif.
After the death of her first husband, she met and married Francis Wheeler Stanford. They were happily married for 12 years before he died.
In 2004 she moved to Payson to be closer to her family. She was an active member of the community and especially loved volunteering at Payson Regional Medical Center as a pink lady. She also volunteered for the Payson Art Association and attended the Payson concert series. She was a social member at Chaparral Pines Country Club where she enjoyed many events and Sunday brunches.
She loved the outdoors and, as a child, learned to hike with her oldest brother. She enjoyed music, ballroom dancing, golf, yoga, Tai Chi and traveling.
Her love and adoration for God was evident in the way she lived her life, as well as the impact she had on the lives of others.
She was a sophisticated lady with a sense of humor who lived life to the fullest.
Mrs. Stanford was predeceased by her parents, Frantisek (Frank) Uher, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia, and Lillie Riley Uher; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Ann Uher; sister, Helen Forehand; husband, William Gibson; husband, Francis Stanford; and son, David Gibson.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Pam Gibson; daughter-in-law, Joanne Gibson; grandchildren and their spouses, Melissa and Justin Mashore, Michelle and Jeff Danielsen, Sean and Melissa Gibson and Stephen Gibson; great-grandchildren, Mekenna Mashore, Kaylee Mashore, Teegan Mashore, Torrin Mashore, Cade Gibson and Kenzey Gibson; nephews, Will Uher, Karl Uher and Frank Uher; and her life-long friend, Winnie Colwell.
