Barbara Sue Dickens, 76, of Tucson, died July 22, 2009. She was born March 16, 1933 in Lake Station, Okla. to Ralph and Pearl Carsten.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Dickens; son, Chuck (Kellie); granddaughter, Erin; grandson, Brett (Kristina); great-granddaughter, Kyleigh; and grandson, Bryant (fiancee Jade). She is also survived by sisters, Sadie (Delmar) and Mary (Don); and many nieces and nephews located throughout the Midwest.
Her parents; sister, Sarah; and her son, Steven preceded her in death.
Mrs. Dickens spent most of her early life living in Sandy Springs, Okla., where she met Tom even before her high school days at Central High School.
They eventually moved to Phoenix in 1955, where she spent many years working for Motorola in the semiconductor industry and later in the mortgage industry.
During her nearly 40 years in the Phoenix area, Mrs. Dickens accumulated many friends with whom she stayed in contact with over the years.
In 1994, the couple moved to Tucson to be near their sons and grandchildren. Over the past 15 years in Tucson, she loved spending time with her immediate family and especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in baseball, softball and basketball games.
She also loved the summers that she and her husband spent at the family’s second home in Payson.
“She was such a kind-hearted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She will be so truly missed by her immediate family, relatives and the many, many friends she was blessed to have,” writes her family.
A memorial service to reflect on and celebrate Mrs. Dickens’ life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 1 at Bring’s Funeral Home, 6910 E. Broadway Blvd. in Tucson. An additional memorial service is being planned in Tulsa, Okla. for those relatives and friends located throughout the Midwest.
