Richard Theodore (Poppy) Wion
September 21, 1941 - December 26, 2010
On Dec. 26, 2010 Richard Theodore (Poppy) Wion lost his short battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 69 at home with his family by his side.
Born Sept. 21, 1941 in Project City, Calif. to Robert and Lois Wion, he was the oldest of six children and spent most of his childhood in Winters, Calif.
Mr. Wion graduated from Winters High School and then went to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He spent two years in the U.S. Army before becoming an agricultural biologist first with the United States Department of Agriculture and then the State of California.
In 1979 Richard met and married Arlene and eventually settled to raise their combined family in San Pablo, Calif. He was the self-appointed and much-appreciated photographer for every activity in which he or his family participated.
The couple retired on the same day in 2004 and in 2005 moved to Payson.
Mr. Wion had many loves in his life — his combined family, photography, fishing with his good friends Henry Lopez and Dave Knights, wine, traveling, nature and watching football and baseball. He was a member of the Payson Elks, American Legion and a most proud member of the Payson Cougars senior softball team.
Mr. Wion leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Arlene; sons, Rich Jr., Joseph (Shanel) and Matt; stepchildren, Willy (Adrienne) Sanchez, Leah (Joey) Aguilar and Amy (Jennifer Thornburg) Restad; plus grandchildren, Courtney Walle, Desiree Wion, Liam and Logan Wion; sister, Carol; adopted brother, Michael; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dee Dee and Kitty; and brother, Bob.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., Payson.
Donations in Mr. Wion’s memory may be made to either pancreatic cancer research or the Humane Society of Central Arizona (formerly the Payson Humane Society).
