Walter L. Grimes

Walter L. Grimes, 86, died Jan. 28, 2010 in Payson. He was born June 17, 1923 in Fresno, Calif. to William O. and Annie (Jordan) Grimes. He graduated from Camp Verde High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed most of his military career in Hawaii.
After the war he purchased a T-6 training plane that he flew for many years. He and his wife of 64 years, Susan, lived in Payson, moving there in 1980 from Washington. In Washington, he worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Management from 1947-1977 and then worked for two Native American tribal hatcheries from 1984-1987 and again in 1990-1993.
Mr. Grimes belonged to the National Rifle Association and Kiwanis. He also was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Flying truly was his passion.
He is survived by his wife, Susan G. Grimes of Payson; a son, Alan Jordan Grimes of Lake Montezuma, Ariz.; three daughters, Annie Dedra Schaff of Port Townsend, Wash., Lorna Elaine Gum of Spokane, Wash. and Meredith Lynn Mechling of Monroe, Wash.; a brother, Robert Jordan Grimes; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors were held Monday, Feb. 1 at Middle Verde Cemetery in Camp Verde, with James Kilby, officiating.
