James Theodore Cutbirth
August 13, 1922 - September 24, 2010
James Theodore Cutbirth, 88, of Payson, died Sept. 24, 2010 at his home in Flowing Springs.
He was born Aug. 13, 1922 in Glendale, Ariz. to Ida Anderson and Claud Cutbirth, traveling the majority of the state wherever his father’s job of building highways, bridges and dams took the family and attending 17 different elementary schools in Arizona.
Economic times were hard in 1940 when he graduated from Phoenix Union, so Mr. Cutbirth volunteered for the U.S. Navy, serving six years, as an airplane mechanic in Pearl Harbor and Midway Island in the Pacific.
He returned to the United States attending extra naval training in Chicago, where he met his wife to be, Grace Stolz, on a blind date.
In their 55 years together, they raised three children in Phoenix, moving to Cornville, Ariz. in 1978 where Mr. Cutbirth worked for Catholic Social Services, helping low-income families weatherize their homes. After his wife’s death in 2001, he moved to Payson with his daughter.
He is survived by his sons, Jim (Vicki) Cutbirth and Tim (Melanie) Cutbirth; daughter, Patti (John) Beauchamp; grandchildren, Christopher Burns, Melanie Cutbirth, Wilson Cutbirth and Nathan Muniz; and great-grandchild, Breanna Burns.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in the Verde Valley.
