February 27, 1914 - December 15, 2011
Thomas Tainsh was born Feb. 27, 1914 in Providence, R.I. to George and Mary Tainsh. He passed away Dec. 15, 2011 in Payson, Ariz. at the age of 97.
He is survived by his son, Thomas Roy Tainsh of Payson; his daughter, Terri Hamlin of Mesa; and his sister, Lillian Martineau of Rhode Island; also six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma; his sisters, Margaret Rosa, Elizabeth Wiggins, Marion Conway and Olive Creasey; and a brother, George Tainsh, all of Rhode Island.
Mr. Tainsh came to Arizona in 1946 and worked in maintenance in the Baltz School District for 27 years. He was a referee for high school football, an umpire for high school baseball and an avid golfer.
He moved to Payson in 1982, was a member of the Payson Golf Club and won many golf awards. He made three holes in one.
He was a devout Christian and a wonderful singer. He sang many solos in the choir at various churches throughout his life.
He served on the Payson Humane Society Board of Directors for many years as president and vice president. He and his wife, Velma, spearheaded the “Spay and Neuter” program and also the Save Our Shelter plan by calling for “Matching Funds.” The people of Payson responded generously and saved the shelter.
At his wish, there will be a private memorial for family only.
