Walter W. Surrett
1924 - 2011
Walter W. Surrett passed away on June 30, 2011.
He was born Jan. 19, 1924 on a ranch in Mayer, Ariz. He was the fifth child of seven. All of the family worked the ranch, a cow and calf outfit.
Mr. Surrett was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army — 346 infantry in Germany.
He went to work for Arizona Light & Power in 1952, Sycamore, Ariz. In early 1960, he moved to Payson and became the area manager for APS. In the early 1980s he retired and moved to Tonto Basin.
He was appointed by Gov. Jack Williams to serve six years on the State Highway Commission from 1969 to 1975. While on the commission, he was able to get many Gila County projects on the drawing board and many to completion by the end of his term.
Mr. Surrett is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nora; his son, John of Tonto Basin; grandchildren, Rachel (Andrew) Harrison and J.D. (Sylvia) Surrett; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, July 16 at the Tonto Basin School.
