Howard E. Haggins
June 20, 1947 - April 29, 2011
Howard E. Haggins, a resident of Payson since 1994, passed away in his sleep at 1:05 a.m., Friday, April 29, 2011. He was born June 20, 1947 in Montebello, Calif., where he grew up.
He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
Mr. Haggins married Louise M. Stebbins on June 18, 1953. They met in Los Angeles, Calif. while ice skating, which was a passion that they both shared in their earlier years.
Mr. Haggins was a tool and die machinist the majority of his working career and worked for A.O. Smith and Litton Industries in California. He retired in 1992 and moved to Payson with his wife to build their retirement home.
Mr. Haggins enjoyed camping, hiking, and was an excellent freshwater fisherman. He and his wife traveled all over the U.S. in their vacation trailer and RV during their married life. If he wasn’t at work, they were probably off camping somewhere.
Mr. Haggins was a devoted husband of 56 years and provided 24-hour care for Louise the last seven years of her life.
He is survived by his sister, Mae Wiley of California; his son, Jim Haggins of Colorado; granddaughters, Karlee McCracken of California and Jolene Schmidt in Washington state. Mr. Haggins also had four great-grandchildren with two more on the way.
There will be a memorial service for both Howard and Louise Haggins on their anniversary date of June 18 in the mountains of the Mogollon Rim north of Payson.
