John (Jack) Leslie Gibbs

John (Jack) Leslie Gibbs, born April 23, 1925 in Miles City, Mont., died Nov. 11, 2011 in Payson, Ariz.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Billie; his children, Greg (Jean Williams) of Kaneohe, Hawaii, Michael (Kathleen Kamikawa) of Encinitas, Calif. and Susan (Laurie Knight) of Santa Fe, N.M.; and his grandsons, John Cody (Katie) and Michael Logan.
Mr. Gibbs grew up in Williams, Ariz. He attended Northern Arizona University, was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1946 and graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1949.
He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the American Area Campaign Medal.
He married Billie in Albuquerque, N.M. on Sept. 4, 1948 and was much loved by her extended family.
Jack and Billie lived in Santa Fe, N.M., where he worked as an accountant for Spencer & Co. and for Davis & Associates until 1987. He was active in politics and once ran for Santa Fe County Commissioner.
He also loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing in northern New Mexico.
Jack and Billie retired to their fishing cabin on the Los Pinos River where they lived for six years, until being snowed in for the month of February. That was the deciding factor for their move to Payson in 1993.
In Payson, Jack was an active volunteer in the Community Presbyterian Church, the Library Friends and the Men’s Golf Association.
He was greatly loved by family and friends, who will remember him with a service at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Community Presbyterian Church. Donations in his name may be made to the Payson Community Presbyterian Church, the Library Friends of Payson or Hospice Compassus of Payson.
