Eleanor Kaufman Mercer

Eleanor Kaufman Mercer was born Sept. 23, 1926 near Old Frame, Pa. to Harold and Hattie (Grimm) Bixler. She graduated from George’s Township High School in May 1943 and worked as a bookkeeper and cashier in a Clover Farm Store in Pt. Marion, Pa. At that time, home delivery of groceries was common, it was also war time, so when their delivery boy went into the Navy, she made the deliveries. Later, the local glass factory joined the war effort and began making Polaroid lenses for the Air Force and she was one of the inspectors of those lenses.
She met Herbert Kaufman on Sept. 23, 1945 while he was home after serving 21 months in the European Theatre of Operations, and they married Dec. 24, 1945. In December of 1949 they moved to Arlington, Ariz., then to Boulder, Colo. in late 1950 and back to Phoenix, Ariz. in 1952. When Herbert and Eleanor “discovered” Payson, they moved there in January 1961.
Mrs. Mercer was a homemaker until moving to Payson where she began working as a waitress at the Beeline and Open Range Cafes, and as a cashier at Wilson’s Market and JD’s Liquor store. She also started delivering The Arizona Republic and was the “Avon Lady” and held home shows and parties selling Beeline Fashions.
Mrs. Mercer became branch manager of the Transamerica Title Insurance Companies’ first office in Payson on Feb. 1, 1970 and retired from there in September 1982. In April 1987 she opened a small craft and supply store until September of 1989. She was also a bookkeeper for Payson Auto Supply.
Mrs. Mercer is survived by six children, sons, Randy Kaufman (Kathy), Duane Kaufman and Mark Kaufman (Susan Jean), all of Payson, and Tom Kaufman of Globe; daughters, Linda Winter (Paul) of Prescott Valley and Jo Anne Dudley of Rio Rancho, N.M.; also surviving are two other “daughters,” Patty Kaufman of Payson and Elaine Kaufman of Flagstaff; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandsons; and a brother, David Bixler (Ann) of Thatcher.
Mrs. Mercer was preceded in death by husbands, Herbert Kaufman in September 1967 and Bob Mercer in January 1990; her parents, Harold and Hattie Bixler of Safford; sister, Betty Kauffroath; stepson, Bruce Mercer; and grandson, Jason Kaufman.
