Fred L. Pattison
September 14, 1932 - July 9, 2012
Fred L. Pattison, 79, passed away July 9, 2012 at his home in Strawberry, from cancer complications. He was born Sept. 14, 1932 in Westchester, N.Y. to George and Florence Pattison.
He is survived by his partner, Joe Sombrio, the two celebrated their 39th anniversary in June of this year.
Mr. Pattison went to three Bible colleges: Northwest Bible College in Minneapolis, Minn.; Baptist Bible Seminary in New York; and Northwest Bible College in New Jersey. He started the Bethel Bible Christian Church, an interracial congregation in Long Island in 1954.
In 1958, Fred moved to Tucson where he started the Faith Baptist Church. He left there in 1970 to come to terms with his sexuality.
He returned to the ministry in 1976 and chartered another church in Phoenix, Casa de Cristo, especially for the gay and lesbian community. During this time, Fred also founded The Evangelical Network (T-E-N).
He retired in 1996, and he and Mr. Sombrio moved to Strawberry. During this time he started the Olive Tree Ministries, a non-denominational group in Strawberry. This group has published several pamphlets and met regularly for Bible study. The two joined the Community Presbyterian Church in Payson.
Mr. Pattison was an avid animal lover and helped rescue many cats and dogs through the years. He adopted many dogs and cats from the Payson Humane Society.
He was a beloved friend of many and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service for Mr. Pattison will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 21 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Payson.
