Donald L. Powell

Donald L. Powell, 78, went home peacefully on Sunday, March 11, in the loving arms of his family. He was born June 8, 1933 to Elmus and Ethel Powell in Hardy, Ark. His family moved to Payson in 1942 and Payson is where in the ’50s he would make his home.
He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953 and was a proud Korean War veteran. He attended Arizona State University where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He worked at Motorola and had his own coil winding business and his last was at AZ Coil here in Payson.
If you dance or learned to dance in the late ’60s through the ’70s, more than likely you were dancing to Don on the drums or bass and his brother Gene on guitar. The music of the Powell brothers brought thousands of miles of dancing pleasure to residents and visitors of this area.
Donald was preceded in death by his father, Elmus M. Powell; mother, Ethel C. Powell; brother, Gene Powell; and nephew, Elmus Gene Powell.
He is survived by his daughter, Hollie (Gary) Higgins; grandchildren, Destiny Thompson, Tylor Thompson and Colten Thompson; step-grandchildren, Levi Higgins, Nolan Higgins and Jonathon Wright; step-great-grandchildren Dien Higgins and Tristen Wright. Also surviving are stepsons, John Wright and Scott Anderson; sister, Sarah (Donald) Fast; nephews, Donald Fast, Donny (Lisa) Powell and Bill Powell; niece, Yvonne Webster; several great-nieces and nephews and three great-great nieces.
The funeral is at 1 p.m., Friday, March 16.
