Paul H. Shields
January 31, 1919 - September 6, 2012
Paul H. Shields was born Jan. 31, 1919 in Walshville, Ill., the fourth child of Elbert and Etta Shields. Paul was called home by our Heavenly Father on Sept. 6, 2012. Paul grew up and attended schools in Litchfield, Ill., passing away just days before his 73rd high school reunion.
He began his military career by joining the National Guard. He served his country for five years, including combat duty in Europe during World War II.
He moved to Arizona in 1947 and graduated from Arizona State University. He became a mail carrier in Phoenix and served for 30 years.
He and his wife were blessed with a son (who preceded him in death in 1998), and three daughters: Debra Gurth, Laura Squires and Lynda Caley. He is also survived by three granddaughters and two grandsons.
In 1984 he met his significant other, Irene Mc Mann, a military widow. After many years of traveling, they decided to visit the Payson area and settled in Star Valley for nine years before moving to Payson. They joined Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church in 1991. He was an active member of Elks Lodge 2154 for 25 years.
He will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 15 at Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church. Ashes to be scattered.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Shepherd of Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane, Payson, AZ 85541 or Hospice Compassus of Payson, 512 Mud Springs Rd., Payson, AZ 85541.
