Leona Marilyn Nelson
Leona Marilyn Nelson, age 75, a former Payson resident, died March 14, 2013 of cancer and stroke complications. Born to Harold and Rose Samuelson of St. James, Minn., she grew up on her parents’ farm in West Sveadahl, just north of St. James. After high school (St. James, Class of 1955) she studied nursing at Augsburg College and Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, where she received a registered nursing diploma in 1959. She worked in multiple nursing environments, including operating rooms, pediatrics, general nursing and administration.
Most recently she was the school nurse at the Fort Huachuca school system for 19 years. After retirement, she served as a volunteer and as a board member for the Payson Hospital Auxiliary. During the last two years of her life, she volunteered at the city library in Queen Creek.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by her husband of 53 years, Ron Nelson; daughter, Linda (grandson, Gregg) Nelson; and son, David (wife Dawn, grandchildren Sammy and Ginny) Nelson. She is also survived by her brother, Delbert (wife Marcie) Samuelson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 26 at Mount Cross Lutheran Church in Payson.
