Naomi Ruth Steele
1924 - 2014
Naomi Ruth Steele, 89, peacefully passed away at Hospice Compassus in Payson, Ariz. on Jan. 30, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents Vol and Mary Casey, sister Eula Mae Talley, and brother Thomas Clifton Casey. She is survived by her sister Eva Lee Fitzgerald of Kingsland, Texas, son Larry (Carolyn) Eppler of Payson, Ariz., daughter Glenna (John) Kay of Globe Ariz., step-children Ron (Ila) Steele and Sandi (Hugo) Steele of Phoenix, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Naomi was born near Barksdale, Texas Nov. 27, 1924. She married Ralph B. Eppler in 1941 and they both came to Miami, Ariz. in 1942. Naomi worked at the JC Penney Company and Ralph worked underground at Miami Copper. Ralph enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. While he was in Europe, Naomi worked at an Aircraft Factory in San Diego, Calif. Ralph passed away in 1949.
Naomi later married Kent K. Nail of Globe, Ariz. who was a truck driver for his brother-in-law Virgil Burke. Naomi became the bookkeeper for Virgil Burke Trucking. Over the years, she was also a waitress at Justa Cafe and Roy’s Barbecue, a member of the Gila General Hospital Auxiliary and the Friendship Club, worked for Joe Dora at the Shamrock Dairy, Peck Challis at Globe Trailer Sales and at Clyde Ramsey’s Market.
Later in life Naomi moved to Scottsdale and became a real estate agent and married Howard E. Steele of Phoenix, Ariz. Naomi and Howard had many opportunities for travel and adventure as he was an executive for Western Electric for several western states. Howard passed away in 1986 and Naomi subsequently moved to Scottsdale. Around this time she acquired a second home in Country Club Manor in the Globe-Miami area.
To be closer to family, in 2005 Naomi moved full-time to her home in Country Club Manor. She then moved with son Larry and daughter-in-law Carolyn from Globe to Payson in 2010.
Naomi’s services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 750 Paxton Avenue, Miami, Ariz. Her interment will be at the Vance, Texas cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Compassus in Payson.
