After the USS Oklahoma was hit by aerial torpedoes during the 1941
attack on Pearl Harbor, J.R. Williams swam under water from the
capsized battleship to Ford Island. The surface of the water was
ablaze with thick oil and Japanese planes where still attacking
from overhead. More than 400 of his shipmates never made it out
alive.
