An 800-pound, life-size bronze elk, patterned after the smaller
version is planned for the roundabout at North Beeline Highway and
Houston Mesa Road. Artist Jim Keller will create the sculpture as
part of the Payson Gateway Project. Bronze sculptures like these
begin as clay, then a latex mold is made and filled with wax. A
porcelain-type mold is made over the wax, then heated to melt the
wax and make room for the bronze. The intricate process is
labor-intensive, time-consuming and rather expensive.
