Keep on trucking: Gene Benson wants to play Santa this year for some lucky kid and the Payson Senior Center to boot. So he’s selling 25-cent raffle tickets (six for $1) for a die cast, 18-wheeler truck. The winner gets the truck and the money goes to the Payson Senior Center. You can buy tickets, by dropping by the senior center on Main Street.

A guided tour of the Tonto National Monument Upper Ruins takes place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5. The tour includes a three-mile roundtrip hike, with an elevation gain of 600 feet and will take approximately three hours. Cost to participate is $15 per person. Limited transportation will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis for an additional fee of $5 per person. Participants will need to bring packed lunches, and space is limited, so register now by calling the Payson Parks and Recreation Department at 474-5242, ext. 358.
Jacob Namm and art teacher Elizabeth Silver took part in Shelby School’s haunted house for the Kindergartners through sixth-graders, teachers, some parents, and even some graduates. The school’s new multi-purpose room was turned into a cavernous maze inhabited by strange and dangerous characters who delivered creepy surprises. Additional photos are on page 7A.

Azucena and Almarosa Coronado got Tootsie Rolls from Jack Lynch during the annual Knights of Columbus-sponsored fund-raiser held Oct. 24-26. “Despite the state of the nation’s economy, Payson residents put into the canisters more paper money than we have ever seen in the 19 years that the Payson Knights have held this drive,” KOC’s Dave Engleman said. The KOC wishes to thank Payson residents for their outstanding contributions to the annual Tootsie Roll Drive to help Payson’s Special Olympics program.
Among the Longhorn cross country runners who qualified for the state championship meet are Joey Garcia and David Knauer. The two are shown at the East regional championships held Oct. 31 at Rumsey Park.
