Bob McQueen climbed onto the seat of a vintage FarmAll tractor to examine the operating controls. Payson town officials say more than 1,200 people attended the Heritage Festival at Green Valley Park Saturday. Additional photos are on pages 8A and 12A.
The Northern Gila County Historical Society, which includes the Rim Country Museum and Zane Grey Cabin, Ranger Station, Marguerite Noble Archives and Assessions and the new Fire Truck Shelter, is having its annual buffet and fund-raiser Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Mazatzal Casino’s new banquet room, with a social from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and the buffet from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Entertainment follows with the portrayal of Sharlot Hall, the famous Arizona historian and poet, by Jody Drake of Prescott. The theme will be pioneer, with a buffet featuring southern fried chicken and all the fixings with chocolate cake for dessert. As a special treat, Carrie J. Carlson has written a booklet of 27 poems, “We Danced All Night,” about Payson people and places that will be presented on each table. Tickets are just $35 each and may be purchased at Rim Country Museum or by calling Judy at (928) 472-9015.

The Payson Senior Center hosts a variety of speakers each month, including newspaper photographers. This was the group that listened to Roundup staff photographer Andy Towle’s presentation.
It’s off to the races at Payson High School’s first home meet of the year. The event, which drew five teams to the girls competition, was held Sept. 10 at Rumsey Park.
