Fossil Creek, which was restored in 2005 after having its flow diverted into a flume for nearly a century, was designated a Wild and Scenic River, which will preserve its free flow.
Julia Randall Elementary School will have a breakfast and tour of its new building Saturday, April 4. Breakfast is from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with tours continuing until 11 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. The breakfast menu includes regular or blueberry pancakes, sausage and syrup with coffee or milk. Tickets can be purchased in advance and will also be available at the door. Three raccoons and a skunk were caught raiding dog dishes recently in Bear Flat. The raccoons were not taking any chances getting caught, two of them acted as sentries looking both ways for the dog to return.
On Saturday in Green Valley Park, authentically dressed Civil War re-enactors will skirmish for possession of Zane Grey’s Cabin — before a 4:30 memorial to honor America’s war dead.
Scottsdale-based We Make History will stage two battles and a series of other scenes on Saturday at Green Valley Park in the first staging of the Battle of Payson, which town officials hope will draw perhaps 1,500 spectators. Local businesses are sponsoring the events and will set up food and activity booths throughout the park.
Some 80 Civil War re-enactors on Saturday will wage a day-long battle to seize control of Payson — or at least of Green Valley Park.
