Tax protesters were out in force Wednesday, April 15, in front of the Gila County complex on Beeline Highway. Many passing cars honked their horns in support of the tax protest movement.
Construction crews are working on phase two of a plan to control a slope that slid onto Highway 87 in March of 2008. The $8 million project is expected to take another four to five months to complete.
How high can your dog jump? See some great canine athletic contestants in a Dogs on Course in North America Agility Trial this weekend at Payson Elementary School, 500 E. Rancho Road. The competition is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19. Agility trials are competition dog sport that is based loosely on the sport of equestrian jumping. Dogs are handled through a series of timed obstacle course challenges like tunnels, teeter-totters, jumps, etc. Saturday the contests will include courses designed by the handlers for their dogs — called Gambles — Snakes N Ladders and jump obstacle courses. Sunday there will be a trigility contest, timed Gambles and more jump obstacle courses. Come out and watch the fun, there is no admission.
Dick and Marilyn Wolfe receive the Community Service Award for their dedicated service to the Payson community and the Rim Country from Dr. Valerie Sullivan, regent of the Mogollon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The award is signed by Pamela Rouse Wright, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution community service award committee chair.

In a cloud of dust, Payson Longhorn Dale Williams steals third base and is ruled safe by the ump. With the win, the Longhorns continue to be tied for the top spot in the East. The Horns are 4-1 in East Region play.
Michael Wright has already caught two bass and the tournament is only an hour and a half old. The professional angling fray wraps up at 4 p.m., Saturday with a weigh-in at the Walmart Supercenter in Payson.
