Longhorn David Carlen (50) will be expected to carry much of the scoring, rebounding and defensive burden during the upcoming East Region basketball season.
The Payson Parks and Recreation Department is offering a mountain biking seminar to be held at 10 a.m., Jan. 31 at Ramada No. 1 in Rumsey Park. There is a $15 fee for the two-hour clinic and ride.
Ted Pettet and his wife, Lillian, listen as Gary Barcom of the Mogollon Sporting Association announces that the MSA will offer two $2,000 scholarships to a pair of Payson High School graduates. The scholarships were named in Pettet’s honor because of his many contributions to the town and school district.
Youth soccer is among the sports offerings at the Grand Canyon State Games. Payson has traditionally had good showings in track and field, shooting and soccer.
The Rim Valley Church of God, 208 S. McLane Road, will host a free concert by Larry Ahlborn at 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18. Ahlborn is a vocalist and pianist. He has a mellow, tenor voice with a down-home style that will relax, bring back and create happy memories. For more information, call (928) 474-5449. The church is located on the west side of the high school.

Shaped by Fire: In a healthy ponderosa pine forest, low-intensity ground fires burn through every five years or so and clear out the saplings and debris, without hurting the mature pines with their lower branches well above the flames.
