The Tonto Rim Sports Club has scheduled its 3rd Annual Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, June 7 at the Jim Jones Shooting Range located south of Payson. The festivities are free to the public and include the opportunity to shoot different styles and calibers of firearms free of charge. Also, this is a great opportunity for children to learn the rules and safe handling of firearms. To reach the Jim Jones Shooting Range, take Highway 87 2.2 miles south of the casino (.3 miles south of Gibson Road), turn left (east) onto gravel road, then continue 1.5 miles to the entrance. A map is available on the club’s Web site tontorimsports club.com. For more information, call (928) 468-1521.

Bud Matson was part of the racing scene when things were simpler, but the danger that cost the lives of many friends forced him to retire.

Payson Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc. welcomed the helping hands of Varsity Scout Troop 6235 from Gilbert May 27 and 28. Ray Nixon, troop leader, scheduled the annual camp outing to the Rim Country in which the 10 young men, ages 14-15, wanted to contribute two days of service to a project in Payson. PAHH’s Longhorn Village development was the selected project. The boys arrived early Wednesday to help the PAHH construction team secure straps to all five units at Longhorn Village. “It is great to have the kids involved and help build. They brought an upbeat energy that really created a good working environment,” commented Ivon English. At the end of the day, the Longhorn families and mentors had a barbecue dinner at Rumsey Park for all the volunteers. Nixon expressed his appreciation for all of PAHH’s hospitality and mentioned they will be back to help again and that this was an experience they will never forget. The building activities continued on through Thursday afternoon. For additional information, please contact Cristine Royer, executive director, at (928) 474-0330.
