Disc Golf is played much like traditional golf, but instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc. Disc golf enthusiasts from around the state will compete in a tournament to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 20 at Rumsey Park. Register now through the morning of June 20 at Rumsey Park, Ramada 3 to learn this new, exciting sport in a festive tournament atmosphere. Late registration/check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. at Ramada 1, and fees range from $15 for the novice player to $40 for the open division. Tyler Sanderson, of Prescott Valley, successfully wrestled this steer to the ground, but not in record time. At the state high school championship rodeo, Payson’s Trevor Haught won the state bareback riding championship and Jessi James was among the top four in the break away roping. Both are now eligible to compete in the national championships next month in Farmington, N.M. As of press time, the Arizona High School Rodeo Association had not compiled complete state results for the event held this past weekend at the Payson Event Center.
The Military Officers Association of America presented Payson Roundup publisher John Naughton with a certificate of appreciation Saturday. The Arizona Council of Chapters and President Vern J. Pall thanked Naughton for his interest and support of retired military personnel in the community. Thanks to his support, MOAA has grown and thrived. Pall said Naughton honors those who served our country and fought to preserve the freedoms we enjoy, one of which is freedom of the press.
Payson Pet Sitting owners Kellie Padon and Nicole Reynolds have offered in-home day care for Payson pets for almost a decade.
Leslie Hoffman and Michelle Benson helped Ray Kinsman complete his rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike after Kinsman’s headlamp went out around 10 p.m. Both women, along with Benson’s husband Lanny, are from Phoenix and hike the Grand Canyon every year with a group from the Nazarene Church. After Kinsman’s lamp and legs went out, the trio helped push Kinsman to the top of the canyon by 11 p.m.
Payson angler Kirk Russell has created a new swim bait that is producing big results at Roosevelt Lake.
Swimmers go every which way as the Sprint Triathlon, conducted Saturday at Taylor Pool, gets under way with a blur of activity.
Margaret Starnes, Carolyn Fruth, Roy Pool and Nicole Scott all attended the Payson Triathlon June 13 at Rumsey Park where a tribute to Cynthia Pool was held prior to the start of the event. Cynthia, a former Payson High teacher, was killed June 9 in a cycling accident in Wyoming.
Craig Brandenburg crosses the finish line with a time of 13:49 in the run portion of the Sprint Triathlon, making him the winner in the men’s 30-39 age group. Timing for the event was provided by CEP Timing of Phoenix.
