Tonto Natural Bridge State Park will once again open to visitors on Memorial Day weekend, as the result of an agreement between the state parks system and Payson. After months of pressure and negotiation, the state parks board agreed to reopen the park, that draws 90,000 visitors annually, during construction work on the decaying, historic lodge.
Students at Julia Randall Elementary School learn about teamwork in their physical education class by working together to toss spiders in the air from a “parachute” and then catch them.
Payson Mayor Kenny Evans, block captain Bobbi Hlavacek and Police Chief Don Engler showed up Wednesday to celebrate the installation of a sign recognizing the neighborhood’s winning effort to look out for one another.

Payson’s Joey Garcia (second from left), along with the rest of the Longhorn track and field team, will host teams from throughout the state as the season’s final events are played out in the Rim Country. It all begins tomorrow, May 6, with the White Mountain League junior high/middle school finals on PHS track. Competition begins at 1 p.m. The following day, the Class 1A North and West regional finals will be contested beginning at 10 a.m. The flurry wraps up Friday and Saturday with the 3A East regional championships. Each day, the East regional field events tip off at 1 p.m. and running events one hour later.
Edwin Estrada (5) slides in safely against the Round Valley Elks. Estrada, who is hitting .312, and his teammates will travel Friday, May 8 to Surprise for the state tournament.

Weston Gibson is among the players who will lead the Longhorns into the state tournament when it begins May 8 in Surprise. Gibson, shown in action against Round Valley, is hitting .409 with nine home runs.
Hikers need to start celebrating and getting in shape. A four-mile course winding around along the Monument Peak Loop Trail — not quite so meadow-like as this — will be featured in Payson’s inaugural Circle the Peak walk/run event as part of National Trails Day. It begins at 6:45 a.m., Saturday, June 6 at the Boulders Trailhead located 3.7 miles east of Highway 260 on the Granite Dells Road.

The Payson Choral Society will feature soloist Jennifer Baltz in the May 9 concert. The concert has two presentations, one at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Payson High School auditorium.
