Penni Stonebrink cuddles with the youngest of her growing family, Lincoln, 2. Stonebrink and her husband Arnold are finalizing the adoption of five siblings they have been caring for since 2007. With the adoption, the Stonebrink family will have 16 children, ranging in age from 2 to 29.
Thomas Kemper, Elaine Richardson and David Higginbothom are among the Payson letter carriers who will be collecting food donations Saturday, May 9 for the St. Vincent de Paul Rim County Food Bank. Postal patrons are asked to donate good, nonperishable food items at their mailboxes on Saturday, or take them to the Post Office lobby. All food stays and benefits local residents. Because of the current economic conditions, the food bank needs donations more than ever. Since last year, there has been an increase of 25 percent in the number of people being helped by the food bank. Volunteers will help carriers pick up donations. Volunteer vehicles will be specially marked.

The Payson Women’s Golf Association joined forces with Chaparral Pines members to support Rally For the Cure with a benefit golf tournament. A record 83 women turned out for the benefit and raised more than $3,000 for the fight against breast cancer.

Irene Neal competed in 13 Sawdust Festivals, winning the Lady Logger of the Year title in 1982 and again in 1983. She is intending to compete this year. The last festival was held in 1993.
The Hellsgate Fire Department at station #22 has been given a facelift. Roy George Haught of Goat Creek Granite and Excavating in Star Valley donated 65 yards of granite to the fire station.
A marker still maintained from the 1940s is shown pointing the way to Phoenix from the top of the Mogollon Rim. Before the advent of instrument flying, landmarks were a daylight aid to pilots.
Marie Fasano does a pre-flight check of her plane before even leaving the hangar area. As a long standing and experienced pilot, Fasano recognizes the necessity of safety and performs pre-flight checks before every flight.
