Retired Army 1st Sgt. Edward Doran was presented with 10 medals Friday to replace the ones that were stolen from him in 1945. On hand for the return were (from left) Doran’s neighbor, his son Grant Doran, Arizona National Guard Chaplain Kurt Bishop and his son Bruce Doran.
The Pine Strawberry School Student Council was designated as an “Honor Council” by the Arizona Association of Junior High Student Councils at the Annual State Convention in Mesa on May 8. Pine Strawberry was one of three schools recognized. Student council earned the recognition by successfully completing a rigorous set of objectives related to leadership. Shea Shields learned about fly-tying and fly fishing from Payson Flycaster member Gary Altman at the May 9 Wildlife Fair. Youngsters in grades 1-4 will get a chance to learn age-appropriate fishing techniques from professional bass fisherman Mark Kile from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 3 at Green Valley Lake. The class meets at the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Office, 1000 W. Country Club Drive. All fishing equipment and bait for the class is provided. Space is limited, so register early. The registration deadline is Tuesday, June 2 and the cost is $5 per child. Prospective participants can register online at www.paysonparks.com or at the Payson Parks and Recreation Office. Women of all ages were invited to come to Green Valley Park at 8 a.m., Saturday, May 9 to participate in the free Mother’s Day Walk. Kristy Walton opened with Zumba Dance, a copyrighted dance program to warm everyone up with Latin music, followed by a one-mile walk around Green Valley Park.

Nick Goodman soars over the bar at 13 feet to take fourth place in the East region champ-ionship meet held in Longhorn stadium.
Matt Wilson threw the shot put 48 feet, .25 inches to win first place during the East track finals held May 8 and 9 in Longhorn stadium.
Sean Dougherty went the distance on the hill in the Horns’ state win over Chinle, scattering 10 hits and giving up two earned runs.
