Stephanie Landers holds a Labrador-golden retriever mix puppy that was on hand at the Humane Society of Central Arizona’s adopt-a-dog event at Sawmill Theatres. The theater presented a special showing of the movie “Inkheart” Saturday morning, with all proceeds going to the humane society.

Tammie Lewis throws a rope on a calf at the Professional Women’s Rodeo Association opening to the Gary Hardt Memorial Spring Rodeo at the Payson Event Center. The event drew world champion women riders from all over the country, but only about 100 spectators. The Thursday night competition kicks off the Spring Rodeo, sponsored by the Pro Rodeo Committee. Admission was a can of food for a charity fund-raising drive. The rodeo highlights a busy weekend in Rim Country, with a host of events taking place, including the Aero Fair.
A free seminar on gardening for children of all ages will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, May 16 at Plant Fair Nursery, 3497 E. Highway 260 in Star Valley. Participants must be accompanied by an adult, and will learn how to plant seeds, how to transplant vegetables and flowers and how to care for garden plants. Participants will get to take home a tomato plant and a giant pumpkin seed in a peat pot to be planted at home. Local teacher and gardener Eileen Lawson will present the seminar.
Kim Williamson from Queen Creek is dismounting even before the rope pulls tight, accounting for her 12.3-second winning time in the tie-down roping event at last night’s Professional Women’s Rodeo Association performance. The Gary Hardt Memorial Spring Rodeo continues today and Saturday at the Payson Event Center, with most of the money raised going to local charities.

The crosscut saw competition is one of the several events at the Loggers Sawdust Festival that is a money contest for participants. Money will be awarded down to sixth place, ranging from $100 for first to $20 for sixth.
