Jeff Garner may be dressed as a clown but some of his antics help protect cowboys thrown from their mounts. Garner is actually a good comedian and put on two lively skits that had the audience laughing with glee.
Stock contractor Skip Beeler, rodeo boss Bill Armstrong, former justice of the peace Ronnie McDaniel and spur maker Leon King were on hand to award silver spurs to the winning bull rider at the Gary Hardt Memorial. The spurs were donated in memory of Diane McDaniel.

Senior residents of Star Valley now have transportation service on Wednesdays instead of Monday thanks to an agreement between the Town of Star Valley and the Payson Senior Citizens Center. There is a $10 registration fee, but then there is no charge for rides between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Students from Payson High School enjoyed a Diamondbacks game during High School Blood Drive Challenge night presented by United Blood Services. The school recently achieved platinum status after holding a blood drive earlier in the year. Dale Basham, a retired commercial pilot, owns the light, sport bi-wing plane in the foreground. Basham has flown for the Air Force, National Guard, and as a commercial pilot for NorthWest Airlines. While in Guam he flew a Vulture 50 into typhoons for three seasons all over the Pacific. Planes he has flown, include Boeing 747, 707, 727, and the DC-10. He bought the sport plane in Frankfurt, Kentucky and flew it back to Payson.
Organizers of this year’s Aero Fair say more than 1,500 people made their way to the airport on Saturday to crane their necks back to admire the vintage planes like this World War II vintage bomber and line up for $25 thrill rides — with all the money going to local charities. Vendors plied their wares, a Forest Service helicopter made water drops, kids gathered for special contests and games and a World War II Spitfire fighter plane delighted the crowd.
Make some time during the busy Memorial Day weekend to visit the museums in Green Valley Park. You will find a special Memorial Day display in the gift shop. One of the area’s pioneers — Lena Chilson Hampton, with the help of others in the community — made a World War II quilt honoring the men and women of the Rim Country who died in the war. The quilt has their names embroidered on stars.

Rylee Halenar was a steady infielder who also shined at the plate for the Lady Horns. Her performance this season earned her a spot on the All-East second team, along with Payson’s pitcher Mary Hagen.
Devin England finished the season hitting .356 and got an honorable mention nod from the East coaches, along with fellow Longhorn Ryan Williams, who hit 400.
Senior Tyler Savage hit .310, had 31 RBIs, 25 runs and was a stellar outfielder, with only one error all season long. He and teammate Ever Figueroa were named to the East region’s second team.
Ridge Halenar was considered by many to be the region’s finest catcher. Although he was denied Player of the Year honors, his talents earned him a spot on the first team.
