Chapter 6, an a capella men’s choir, opens the 2009-2010 season for the Tonto Community Concert Association Sept. 11 at the Payson High School Auditorium.
Volunteers were treated to a buffet-style meal at Chaparral Pines during a recent Big Brothers Big Sisters awards ceremony and appreciation dinner. Later that evening, attendees danced to music spun by DJ Craig.

Don’t miss the family fun at the Loggers Sawdust Festival this weekend. Adults and children will compete in 26 different events designed to test accuracy, skill and endurance. Watch the wood chips fly and the logs roll beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24, at the Payson Event Center, just south of town and west of Highway 87, across from the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino. Admission is $8 for adults, free for kids 12 and under. Boy Scouts of America will serve a pancake breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. both days. The popular jam sessions are held at 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the Pine Community Center Cultural Hall. Everyone is invited to join the fun — bring your instrument and join in or just sit, relax and enjoy the foot-stomping, hand-clapping music. It’s free.

Clayton Randall throws with determination during the pitching phase of the pitch, hit and run competition at the Kiwanis fields, Saturday. Kolton Ricke was the 7- to 8-year-old champion with 406 points. Ryan Rick accumulated 474 points to edge Kasey Chamberlin for the 9 to 10 years title. Chamberlin finished with 389 points. In the 11 to 12 years group, Logan Morgan accumulated 635 points to take top honors. Nick McMullen posted a whopping 850 points to win the 13 to 14 years championship. All the winners are now eligible to advance to regional competition.
Floating Free: A bass fisherman uses a float tube to paddle about among the drowned trees and brush at the Tonto Creek inlet to Roosevelt Lake. With the lake at record levels, the submerged brush and trees are providing nutrients and cover for bass likely making Roosevelt one of the best bass fishing lakes in the country for the next several years.
Andrew Curtis, Andy Bartusch, Blake McCallum and Caleb Parkeson all toured the Tonto Fish Hatchery as guests of Dennis Pirch.

Wildcats’ catcher Jerusha Paine played her position well as her team battled the Bears in their final game of the season at Rumsey Park Tuesday. The Wildcats had a short get-together at ramada five right after the game with pizza and soda for the players, coaches and parents.
The first phase of town homes at Rim Ridge Estates, located across from Gila Community College, are scheduled to be completed later this month. The single family homes offer custom amenities including oak cabinets, two-car garages and electric fireplaces.

Hundreds of people took time to view the antique tractors on display and for the Pine ramada dedication.
Tonto Creek and most of the other Rim Country creeks and lakes got a double dose of rainbow trout this week, in preparation for the Memorial Day Weekend crowds. Local anglers should grab a pole and go fishing Friday, to avoid the weekend crush. The East Verde, Haigler Creek, Woods Canyon Lake and others should all be brimming with trout.
It took Morris Brown, 69, and Phyllis Brown, 68, 15 hours to hike the Grand Canyon Monday from rim to rim. The pair trained for the gruelling hike months in advance and only carried light daypacks to make the trek in one day. Their biggest complaint: the 107-degree temperature at the canyon’s floor.
