A 20-foot-square chunk of ceiling in the second floor meeting room of the Payson Senior Center on Main Street collapsed Thursday at about noon. The collapse prompted the fire department to evacuate about 50 people who had just gathered for lunch. Employees say the problem originated with the roof-top swamp cooler, after Wednesday night’s freezing temperatures burst the pipes. Water from the broken pipes seeped down into the insulation above the ceiling until its weight caused the collapse. Just last year, the senior center faced major expenses when water leaks caused problems in the kitchen.
