Rick Powers, consultant from Jacobs Engineering, began his presentation at the CAC meeting with visual aids to emphasize what has been studied to facilitate a bypass around Payson.
Ronnie McDaniel (left) and Roy Haught pose with a chest donated for the Gila County Pioneer Scholarship Fund. The chest was constructed by students in Richard Alvarez’s class at Payson High School, and celebrates pioneer heritage from 1884 to the present day.
Bruce Sitko, an Arizona Game and Fish Department educator, blows an elk whistle while giving a lesson on spotting the creatures near Payson. The program combines classroom teaching with field trips to help Arizonans connect with the state’s diversity of wildlife.
The jazz concert Sept. 15 was a kick, according to those in attendance. The crowd of about 100 people loved the piano player, Lew Turano, who flew in from Stamford, CT to play here. They also really enjoyed the variety provided by having three vocalists. Musicians at the monthly event were Lew Turano, piano; Gerry Reynolds, drums; John Darst, guitar; and Chris Long, bass. The latter three make up the Payson Jazz Trio. Vocalists were Renee Patrick, Colleen Brown and John Landino.
Learn about Rim Country history at the Western Heritage Festival beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 in Green Valley Park. There will be demonstrations and lots of activities. You can also enjoy the best fiddle music in the state this weekend at the 39th annual Vertielee Floyd Memorial Fiddle Contest. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday at Amity’s Acres, just off South McLane Road (south of West Main Street), where the state’s best musicians will compete for a chance to go to the nationals in Idaho later in the fall.

In the middle of July, Na-tio-tish led his band up Cherry Creek to the Mogollon Rim, intending to reach General Springs, a well-known water hole on the Crook Trail.
The annual Justice McNeeley Quad Run takes place Saturday, Oct. 10. The day starts with breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Rimside Grill in Pine. The Poker Quad Run begins at 10 a.m.
The Employee of the Month Recognition event was hosted by Admissions/Marketing/Social Services at Rim Country Health & Retirement Community. Employees got the opportunity to dunk administrators, and not only received satisfaction from being an excellent shot but a giant-sized Hershey’s Bar if they hit the mark! Prize drawings included a dinner for two, donated by the Mazatzal Casino; a trip for two on the Verde Canyon Railroad, donated by KMOG; and a three-night stay in Rocky Point, Mexico donated anonymously.
