Residents of Star Valley gathered over the Valentine’s Day weekend to clean up roads and shoulders badly damaged by winter storms. Besides rakes and shovels, heavy equipment was needed to shore up the roads.
Green Valley Lake in Payson has been producing some trophy fish in the 4- to 5-pound category, along with plenty of 10- to 12-inch trout perfect for the frying pan.

New Wheels: The Gila County Sheriff’s Office has donated a minivan seized from people smuggling illegal immigrants to Community Bridges, a Payson drug treatment and rehabilitation program. Celebrate the great Dr. Seuss at the Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Road, starting at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 2. Enjoy a hot dog supper between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. for just $1 per plate, and then settle in for some fun at 6:30 p.m. and hear The Cat in The Hat and meet the new Payson Dr. Seuss, Harry Kuperberg. There will also be activities and prizes. The Pine Libary celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 6. Right now it is closed while the move is made into the new children’s room. A grand re-opening will be held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., March 6 with the Dr. Seuss Celebration and Clifford the Big Red Dog.
James Cain had to be rescued by a team of Gila County Sheriff’s Office, Public Works and Forest Service employees after he drove his vehicle past a ‘road closed’ barricade in an attempt to cross Tonto Creek Tuesday afternoon.

As temperatures continued to drop Monday, the heavy, wet snow turned into a hard, ice base underneath the compacted snow, which contributed to many drivers losing control of their vehicles on the roadways in the Heber/Overgaard area (photo at right).
The driver of this pickup truck was apparently going too fast for the winter driving conditions on Highway 260, 10 miles outside of Heber-Overgaard, Tuesday morning, Feb. 23.
This Wupatki ceremony pit is part of the Wupatki National Monument near Flagstaff. There are many other well-preserved ruins throughout the Arizona highlands, including those at Montezuma’s Castle, Tuzigoot, Palatiki, Honanki and V Bar V Heritage site, all within a one- to two-hour drive of Payson.
