Officer Jimmy Simmons, with the Department of Public Safety, screens a driver at a DUI checkpoint set up New Year’s Eve at the south end of town. From the 1,179 vehicles that went through the checkpoint, only five people were arrested for driving under the influence. Designated drivers manned 56 of the vehicles, according to DPS.
